Owned by husband-and-wife Jody and Brenda Scott, the latter of whom is a Red Seal chef, the winery cultivates cool climate grapes to produce crisp, aromatic varietals. Perhaps, however, our most notable surprise was Valley of the Springs Winery, just outside town. At Bella Soriah, the hot new restaurant on historic Broadway Street, we munched on Mediterranean-inspired tapas, loving the whipped feta, fresh sourdough focaccia, Spanish meatballs and stuffed mushrooms. Artisan chocolatier Jennifer Cross’s bright pink Chocolate Shop is pure joy, as are her dark chocolate and orange ganache squares and chocolate-dipped candied ginger bites. We also made a few delicious discoveries while in Nakusp. The current exhibition, Journey through Mountain Dreams – a collection of abstract acrylics by Toronto-based artist Grace Croughan – is absolutely stunning. Travelling with my artist mum and budding artist Brooklyn, Studio Connexion Gallery was another fabulous, cost-free find to explore. Now an adventure hub with a lively arts community, Nakusp hosts many free, family-friendly outdoor events, including Music in the Park, a summer concert series on Wednesday evenings (July and August), and a Saturday morning Farmer’s Market, running mid-May through mid-October. We spent one whole day off-property touring the tiny, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it village of Nakusp – first settled in 1892 as a sternwheeler port for transporting Slocan Valley’s silver, lead and zinc. A splash pad, children’s playground and beach access round out Halcyon’s family-friendly amenities. During the day, Halcyon’s 30-degree Celsius summer pool on the lower deck was perfect, even in the cooler-than-seasonal temperatures. A starlight float through the warm pool’s jetted swim channel – interspersed with refreshing cold plunges and hot pool soaks – quickly became a beloved evening ritual. Due to the high lithium content and unique mineral makeup, including sodium, magnesium, calcium and strontium, the naturally heated spring water draws bathers from near and far, seeking its therapeutic, healing properties.
